About the role

Tech Nation is aiming to build out a Board of world-class calibre, to act as a model both for the companies within its network, and the wider tech industry as a whole.

Tech Nation’s Board is made up of nine Non-Executive Directors and one Executive Director (CEO Gerard Grech). The organisation is looking for up to four new members for its Board of Directors, due to a combination of some end-of-tenure appointments and an eagerness to expand the skills and knowledge of its Board. This is an opportunity for digital tech, business and industry leaders to help guide the next stage of development of this successful tech industry catalyst in a time when it’s never been needed more.

The Board of Tech Nation is responsible for the long-term strategy and success of the organisation. The Board maintains prudent and effective controls to assess and manage risk, ensures that resources are in place for the company to meet its objectives, and reviews management performance. The Board also sets Tech Nation’s values and culture, and ensures that its obligations to its stakeholders and others are understood and met.

Non-executive appointments to the Board are based on merit and with full regard to the benefits of diversity.

Person Specification

Tech Nation is seeking Non-Executive Directors to join its Board in Autumn 2020. Tech Nation lives and breathes the sector it serves; it therefore seeks Board members with a founder, investor, marketing or other senior digital leadership background, and a deep understanding of entrepreneurship and digital ecosystems. In addition, they should be influencers in the tech scale-up community.

Board members are expected to have strong ties to one or more UK tech clusters, particularly those outside London as well as internationally, such as Silicon Valley in California, New York, Singapore or Shenzen. As Tech Nation works closely with the UK government, a network within Whitehall would be a welcome advantage.

Beyond this, the team hopes that new Non-Executives will be able to enrich the Board's knowledge base more generally; experience of growth capital raising, business academia, scalable digital knowledge platforms and partnerships in particular would be valuable to Board discussions.
