About the role

Tech Nation is at an exciting and crucial stage in its growth. As Head of Commercial, you will be responsible for generating income from the private sector to drive our expansion beyond activities funded by Government. Over the past 10 years, we have built a strong brand and presence in the UK for growing the Digital economy through our network and tech-focused growth programmes. We are looking for an excellent and accomplished business development leader who has strong experience of both account management and sales to lead the team in taking our products and services to the Private sector, as well as improving internal operations. This is a unique interim opportunity (with potential to become permanent) to develop the business in new and exciting ways, helping Tech Nation build long-lasting relationships with the partners. The Head of Commercial will be responsible for: 

  • Building a business development strategy that hits our income targets - identify new business opportunities, including new markets, growth areas, trends, clients, products and services 
  • Shaping and executing a framework for account management that builds long-lasting relationships
  • Devising strategies for driving sales growth from the Private Sector, including creating a pipeline and pricing strategy
  • Supporting the Commercial Director to embed a values based commercial culture across the organisation
  • Overseeing the day to day management of the Commercial team

A Day in the Life of the Head of Commercial might look something like this:

  • Build a pipeline of partnership opportunities through having a deep understanding of the players in the digital eco-system and where Tech Nation can add value;
  • Establish a comprehensive portfolio of offers for partners (including programmes, events, support packages, membership schemes, etc.), that will allow them to easily partner with Tech Nation;
  • Analyse existing approaches to the development of business and make changes where appropriate in order to deliver results more effectively;
  • Identify sales opportunities as a result of market changes;
  • Set up meetings with prospective customers to sell our products and services;
  • Build long-lasting relationships with partners that keep them engaged and promoting Tech Nation to others; 
  • Manage Sales and Account Management teams;
  • Collaborate with programme leads to ensure that events are conceived and executed to the highest quality to satisfy guests and partners; 
  • Key contact for sponsors, partners and new clients;
  • Negotiate sales contracts with clients and ensure their profitability;
  • Work with the marketing team to devise marketing materials and tools to support new business;
  • Monitor satisfaction of existing partners to ensure excellent service delivery and future business;

As well as sharing our ambitions and values you will have:

Previous experience working in a senior business development role.

Proven track record of generating new business and achieving revenue growth.

Natural leader and motivator of sales and business development teams.

Ambitious and target focussed with a drive to succeed.

Strong track record of planning, building and maintaining complex and successful partnerships with corporates and startups;

Strong track record in creating propositions suitable for corporates and professional services firms;

Proven ability to make complex trade-offs using sound business judgement, project and budget planning techniques and applying political astuteness when required;

Proven track record of training and coaching business development teams effectively, with evidence that the interventions helped increase revenue. 


  • Commands authority and respect, building strong consensus and momentum around shared vision, strategy and execution plans;
  • Strong leadership skills, with an ability to operate in fast and dynamic environments, both in a formal/political and informal settings; 
  • Outstanding presenter and communicator to a wide range of businesses, entrepreneurs and political audiences. Ability to present complex issues in a simple through a range of mediums; 
  • Excellent business development and negotiation skills;
  • Highly numerate;
  • Tenacity and drive to seek new business and exceed targets;
  • Good networking skills;
  • Ability to think strategically;
  • Ability to analyse sales figures and write reports;
  • Creative talent with ability to solve tough problems;
  • In-depth knowledge of the digital and tech industry and its current events; 
  • A great team player, who works effectively with colleagues and aligns their work objectives with that of the company’s; 
  • Extremely resourceful; able to deal with ambiguity and challenges in a scale-up environment;
  • Skill in prioritising and triaging obligations; 
  • Attention to detail;
  • Excellent time management and organisation skills;
