About the role

If you’re interested in the scale up tech ecosystem, what makes entrepreneurs, founders and investors tick, the role of tech to drive productivity, job creation and economic growth, engaging with challenges like digital skills, access to talent and finance plus promoting tech sectors including fintech, lawtech and net zero, then this could be the role for you. 

This role offers an exciting opportunity to be the Head of Media in Tech Nation’s Communications and Stakeholder Affairs Directorate (CSA). The CSA area is a critical function within Tech Nation managing relationships between Tech Nation and its audiences including employees, media, governments, entrepreneurs, founders, investors, industry bodies and influencers across the tech industry globally.  

Tech Nation has an incredibly busy press office and we’re looking for a comms leader to strategically manage the many enquiries we receive directly from the media and lead our day-to-day relationships with PR agencies, ensuring that we are responsive to the news agenda. To be successful, you’ll need to be embedded in the business to understand and utilise content Tech Nation itself generates, dig out new and interesting story angles and repurpose content in creative ways. You’ll also need to create and own a clear and coherent media strategy that resonates with key audiences. 

We operate in a crowded and fast-paced media space, but by harnessing a data-driven approach we’ve been uniquely placed to date and have achieved a considerable share of voice. That said, we’re looking for new ideas for our media strategy, domestically and internationally. This could be anything from developing editorial boards with our scale up cohorts, to exploring new data sets or creating new platforms.

The Head of Media role will:

  • Manage the strategy for and delivery of Tech Nation’s media relations activity
  • Develop PR strategies that 1) enhance and protect brand and reputation 2) support programme delivery objectives  3) support our commercial goals and targets 
  • Ensure activities are measured against agreed targets and OKRs (objectives and key results)
  • Manage our relationships with top tier media 
  • Manage our relationships with our PR agencies and associated budgets 
  • Coordinate media engagement across Tech Nation, its spokespeople and subject matter experts
  • Line management of two team members 

A Day in the Life of the Head of Media might look something like this:

  • Provide strategic counsel on how to achieve our comms goals in the top tier national, international and technology titles (including broadcast media) 
  • Working with government press offices to develop content for Ministers and MPs
  • Monitor the media for opportunities to showcase our UK scaling tech companies and innovation 
  • Work with colleagues to craft compelling media content including press releases, case studies, thought pieces, statements and presentations
  • Work closely with external stakeholder comms teams including ecosystem partners, corporates and entrepreneurs
  • Plan, organise and staff media interviews and events 
  • Meeting with top tier media contacts to explore future opportunities and shape the media agenda
  • Showcase Tech Nation PR activities and coverage across the business and to our cohort companies 
  • Ensure all spokespeople are media trained and that we have a diverse and compelling group of spokespeople 
  • Pitch as part of Tech Nation’s Decision Den process to get funding for your ideas

As well as sharing our ambitions and values you will have:

  • 10+ years experience working in-house or in agency technology / business media relations roles (preferably both) or experience as a technology journalist
  • Strong written and verbal communications skills 
  • Fascinated by and knowledgeable about UK tech policy, entrepreneurship and the future of our economy
  • Strong relationships with tech, government and business journalists 
  • Knowledge of and network that includes tech influencers 
  • Great team player- used to leveraging resources and making things happen in a collaborative way 
  • Entrepreneurial, energetic and solutions-focused 
  • Enjoy building a network and managing relationships
  • Ability to skilfully navigate and collaborate in a multi-stakeholder environment
  • Skilled in managing upwards and downwards to achieve goals 
  • Ability to think laterally about partnering with stakeholders to create news
  • Proven track record of success and results in complex, fast-moving environments
